A Craft Program: Co-Creating Across Generations

Co-Creating Across Generation
ROOTS Program
The ROOTS Program is an intergenerational craft initiative designed to reconnect youth and senior citizens through traditional Sarawakian crafts. Hosted by Landik and supported by Yayasan Hasanah, the program features hands-on workshops led by experienced artisans across weaving, beading, and textile arts.
ROOTS introduces a collaborative learning approach where senior citizens gain new skills and confidence, while youth explore cultural heritage and co-develop innovative craft-based products. Frequently Asked Questions
Is there a fee to join?
Nope! ROOTS is fully funded and free for selected participants, thanks to the support of Yayasan Hasanah and the Ministry of Finance under the SEHebat Catalyst Program initiated by SDEC. However, we would collect a refundable deposit of RM100 upon registration confirmation to ensure participant commitment to the program.
What is the time commitment?
The program runs for about 5 weeks, with 5 physical meetups (usually on weekends) and a showcase event. Participants must attend at least 80% of sessions to receive certification and take part in the final showcase.
Where will the sessions be held?
All meetups will take place in Miri, Sarawak. Specific venue details will be shared with confirmed participants.
What will I learn during the program?
You’ll explore craft materials, learn product design basics, packaging, storytelling, and even how to price the newly created products — all while working alongside experienced artisans and community members.
How many materials can I choose to explore?
You can explore up to 3 different materials, and you must stay committed to one main group for collaboration and final product development. You may contribute ideas to the other materials that you had chosen too!
Do I need to know crafting beforehand?
Not at all. Whether you’re a beginner or experienced, you’ll learn directly from artisan mentors through guided, hands-on sessions.
Can I bring back the craft product that I had made?
Unfortunately no, all the products belong to the organisers and you will be credited for your contribution in the publication at the end of the program.
What happens after the program ends?
Selected products may be refined and produced by Landik’s senior artisan community. You may also be invited for future collaborations or training opportunities.
How do I apply?
Simple! Fill out our online registration form here before the deadline. We’ll reach out to shortlisted participants for the next steps.
